Mission Mer
Centrum för rättvisa is an independent non-profit organisation whose mission consists in guarding individuals’ human rights and freedoms. Since its foundation in 2002, Centrum för rättvisa has gradually established itself as the leading organisation in this field. It is in fact the first non-profit public interest law firm in Sweden.
The core idea of Centrum för rättvisa is that the respect for individual human rights and freedoms is the foundation of a democratic state based on the rule of law and of any well-functioning society. We support individuals by litigating cases of principle and by participating in the public debate. We act independently from political parties or other interest groups. We never charge the people we assist.
Our tools are legal human rights and freedoms protection instruments such as the Swedish Constitution, Swedish legislation, the European Convention on Human Rights and the Law of the European Union.
In practice, our work includes examining injusticies, informing individuals about their rights and acting as representatives in legal proceedings. Often cases are not brought to light because the victims are unaware of their rights or lack the financial means to assert their rights. Centrum för rättvisa levels out the odds against imposing counterparts.
Centrum för rättvisa engages in cases involving legally protected human rights and freedoms, where there has been an explicit violation of such a right or freedom or in cases of principle where there has been a disrespect of the rule of law or arbitrary use of authority.
Centrum för rättvisa has, since its beginning in 2002, assessed about 550 cases and taken on more than 40 cases involving issues in the field of equal protection (non-discrimination), freedom of association, property rights, economic liberty and various aspects of the rule of law.
On behalf of individuals, we have litigated against the State, municipalities, trade unions and employers. In four out of five times, our clients win their cases. Several cases have reached the Swedish Supreme Court, the Swedish Supreme Administrative Court and the European Court of Human Rights. More than 1,300 individuals have so far enjoyed the support of Centrum för rättvisa.
Centrum för rättvisa also engages in the public debate when relevant to our cases. So far, our cases have been mentioned in more than a thousand clips and articles on TV, radio, national newspapers, local media, magazines and more.
